Strategies and Best Practices for Working with and Supporting Participants with Disabilities

There are many challenges that children/adolescents and adults with disabilities face on a regular basis, the job of the Nutrition Educator is to never add to this list. Instead, the Nutrition Educator's job as facilitator is to make an equitable and inclusive learning environment that enhances their participants' knowledge on the subject matter and stimulates greater interest in the subject matter. Ultimately, providing the opportunity for growth and development in life skills in a safe space. Individuals with disabilities have a right to program accommodations and/or modifications; therefore, to provide equal opportunity to all it is necessary to make the appropriate adaptions when providing programing.

CalFresh Healthy Living, UC's goal is to ensure that CalFresh-eligible children, families and adults have a supportive environment that increases the opportunity for everyone to live the healthiest life possible.

Following these strategies and best practices will allow for any participant to be a part of a successful learning environment. These strategies are far from comprehensive but provide a starting point for any Nutrition Educator to incorporate when delivering CalFresh Healthy Living, UCCE approved curriculum.
